To help you maximise a good bike ride the following check list may be helpful:
Carry a tool kit with these items included:
- Inner tube for each size of wheel
- Tyre Levers
- Multi-tool with chain tool, Allen keys and screwdrivers
- Pump ensuring it fits different valve sizes
- Puncture repair outfit or Pre-glued patches.
Navigation
Hydration and food
- Water bottle - with something in it!
- Hydration pack
- Energy drinks
- Energy bars
Lighting
- Check over if the ride will include any time when the light is fading, you will need lights on your bike. Its a legal requirement on the roads.
- On a mountain bike trail, if it gets dark and your are in the woods you will need lights.
Clothing
- Cycling shorts
- Track mits or gloves
- Clothes layering dependent on weather..
- Waterproof outer layers if required
- Sunglasses and sun screen
Emergency Preparation:
- Mobile phone
- Identification in case of accident including phone numbers
- If solo cycling let somebody know your route & rough timescale of ride
Bike check:
- Tyre pressures appropriate for the route and terrain
- Tyre treads not worn, no splits, cuts or the inner tube poking through the tyre
- Brake pads are adequate and brakes work efficiently
- Check tightness of handlebars, headset, saddle attachment, wheel attachments and pedal attachments
- Lubrication of chain and gearing is adequate
- Gears change correctly and easily
- Wheel alignment
- Bell works.
